Message I'm pretty sure I'm done with film. It's hard to part with my film cameras, but it would be silly to keep them around, sitting on a shelf...

In Photoshop, there are "dodge" and "burn" tools, darkroom terminology. These are actions you perform in the darkroom while the negative is being exposed onto the photo paper, taking your hand or some other object to block some light ("dodge") from getting to the print where it will be too dark, or "burn" with a hole cut in a piece of paper where the image requires a little longer exposure to be dark enough.

These tools exist in Photoshop - in the toolbox, you'll see them, seventh tool down in the right column. Dodge looks like a black circle on a stick, and Burn looks like a hand making a circle. The third choice in that box is a sponge, so that may be what you see right off. Click and hold on them to access the other tools in that box.

You'll want to play with the Dodge tool a bit to get some details out of all that black. Particularly on shot 10-29-2006-62.jpg; the wheel could really use some brightening there. So get that tool and play with the settings. For starters, set the exposure to 50%, just to see the effect in a really obvious way, and use a large brush size with a feathered edge. Undo the mess you make there. ;-) When you do it for real, I tend to have the tool set at a low exposure, like even 3%, and I work the area I'm brightening, making several passes with different brush sizes. You'll get the hang of it. =)
